Footie pajamas will never stop being cute. I love the feet on these and got some for my niece and another pair with kittens.

peppermint bark

24 Nov

My favorite thing about the holidays besides spending time with the people I love is definitely the food. Peppermint bark has always been my favorite. It’s so easy to make and incorporates my favorite: candy canes.

Peppermint Bark:

12 oz chocolate chips
1 pound white chocolate chips
1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
1/2 cup peppermint candy, crushed

Preheat oven to 250. Line a 9×13 pan with foil, letting it hang over the sides. Spray foil. Pour the chocolate chips in an even layer on the foil. Place in oven for 5 minutes or until almost melted. Remove from oven, smooth with an offset spatula or knife. Place in refrigerator until cold and firm, about 20 minutes.

Melt white chocolate chips in a double boiler or in a metal bowl over simmering water (don’t let bottom of bowl touch water), until chocolate is almost melted. You can use your microwave for this if you’re brave! Remove bowl from water and stir until completely melted, stirring in extract. Let cool a little bit so it doesn’t melt the chocolate layer when you pour it on top. Pour this over chocolate layer, and, working quickly, spread to cover. Sprinkle with crushed candy.

Chill until both layers are firm. Lift foil out of pan and shake off excess candy. Break or cut into manageable Pieces.

guest post: la baie de sirènes

22 Nov

La Baie des Sirènes

Hidden 235 miles southeast of Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, near a small town called Grand Bereby, is La Baie de Sirènes (Mermaid Bay). The beautiful beach is tucked away, without a single sign pointing to its existence. Once operated by an elderly Dutchman during a more affluent period, the resort is now owned by the government, and impeccably maintained by a tiny staff. Approaching its high wall and opposing gate, a sign will inform you that the beach is closed to the public. But ask the guard if you might be able to have a peek inside, and he will tell you it’s alright, but that he wouldn’t mind a little something. Soon after giving him a tip and entering, you will find the most beautiful beach you have ever seen in your life. Likely you will spot a few wooden fishing boats, colorful flags flying, on the horizon. Your next impulse will be to get into your swimsuit, and it this point you will likely see the caretaker coming out to meet you. A few friendly words and he will break out the beach chairs, grateful for the company and the work. This man’s contact information is the key to the perfect vacation. The government allows the staff to fill ten rooms a night, but the resort does not advertise.

No one should visit West Africa without making a trip to this beautiful little corner of the world.

little feet and christmas trees

22 Nov

Christmas and baby socks go together like peanut butter and jelly. Every year in my family everyone gets new socks and it would be perfect to have these socks start the tradition for a new member of the family.

a weekend hiatus and… holiday earrings!

22 Nov

I love pink. I love pearls. Therefore, I love these (they’re also called Luminesce, that’s quite the enticing name):

It’s snowing outside right now and I’m so excited for the holidays, my favorite thing might be all the occasions to get dressed up with family and friends (after the food and guilt work-outs).

I’m also going to have a guest post from my lovely sister. About what? I have no idea.

hairpins

18 Nov

My new favorite thing to add to an updo! They’re not great for actually holding your hair up if your hair is anywhere near thick, but once you’re done styling just add them for a little sophisticated sparkle.

sleep sacks!

18 Nov

Whoever thought of these is a genius. Changing newborns after at least every feeding is a chore, sleep sacks make it so much more convenient! Baby stays dressed while you change and the drama is decreased significantly. I bought four of these for my niece when she was born and she wore them for months since there is plenty of room.

These are from The Land of Nod:
